Adega do Mato Escolha Arinto White 2025
A beautifully vibrant and expressive Arinto from the mountainous eastern edge of Vinho Verde, bursting with zesty lime, refreshing acidity and a distinctive saline character that makes it a dream pairing for seafood.
Adega do Mato Escolha Arinto comes from Ribeira de Pena, where the lush green landscapes of Vinho Verde begin to meet the rugged mountains of Trás-os-Montes. Made from 100% Arinto, this wonderfully expressive white showcases one of Portugal's most versatile indigenous grape varieties.
Expect bright citrus aromas, particularly fresh lime and lemon, alongside delicate tropical fruit and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it's dry and medium-bodied, with a lovely combination of vibrant acidity, rounded fruit and a distinctive salty finish. At 13.5% ABV, it offers considerably more body than many people expect from Vinho Verde, while remaining wonderfully fresh and refreshing.
What makes Arinto special?
Arinto is one of Portugal's most important indigenous white grape varieties, celebrated for its remarkable ability to retain natural acidity, even in the country's warmest wine regions.
In Vinho Verde, Arinto is also traditionally known as Pedernã. It's grown throughout Portugal, but is particularly famous in Bucelas, just north of Lisbon, where it produces some of the country's most distinctive and age-worthy white wines.
What makes Arinto fascinating is its combination of intense citrus flavours, vibrant acidity and impressive versatility. Typical aromas include lemon, lime and green apple, often accompanied by a mineral or occasionally saline character.
Its naturally high acidity also makes it an excellent blending partner, bringing freshness and structure to richer grape varieties. But when bottled on its own, as Adega do Mato does here, Arinto really gets to show off its personality.
And there's another reason to love it: Arinto can age remarkably well. Over time, its youthful citrus character can develop more complex notes of honey, nuts and toast, while retaining the acidity that keeps the wine lively.
What does Escolha mean?
Escolha translates to "Selection" or "Choice", but in Vinho Verde it's more than just an attractive word on a wine label.
It's a regulated quality designation used for wines that meet additional sensory quality requirements, distinguishing them from standard wines within the appellation.
Importantly, Escolha doesn't necessarily mean the wine has been aged in oak or that the grapes were harvested later. Instead, it indicates that the wine has achieved the required level of quality through the region's certification process.
For Adega do Mato, it's a fitting designation for a wine that combines the natural freshness of Arinto with greater body, concentration and complexity.
What makes this part of Vinho Verde different?
Adega do Mato sits near the eastern boundary of the Vinho Verde wine region, where Atlantic influences begin to meet the warmer, more continental conditions of Portugal's mountainous interior.
Unlike the cooler, wetter coastal vineyards, inland areas can experience warmer summer days and greater temperature variation, allowing grapes to develop richer fruit flavours while maintaining valuable natural acidity.
This is particularly important for Arinto, a grape that naturally holds onto its acidity even as it ripens. The result can be a wine with both generous fruit and remarkable freshness, rather than the lighter, more delicate style often associated with Vinho Verde.
It's a wonderful reminder that Vinho Verde is far more diverse than its reputation for light, slightly sparkling whites might suggest.
About Adega do Mato
Adega do Mato is a family wine project revived in 2012 by Vitor Magalhães, who set out to restore a century-old winery and bring his family's dream of producing Vinho Verde to life.
Located in Balteiro, Ribeira de Pena, the winery sits close to the Tâmega River, surrounded by dense pine forests and the wild vegetation of northern Portugal's mountainous countryside.
The estate works with approximately four hectares of vineyards, carefully selecting traditional Portuguese grape varieties to create wines that reflect this distinctive corner of the region.
Even the name tells a story. Adega do Mato roughly translates to "winery in the scrubland", a reference to the surrounding landscape and its position between the green Atlantic-influenced vineyards of Vinho Verde and the rugged interior of Trás-os-Montes.
It's a fitting name for a winery that celebrates the local landscape, traditional grape varieties and the wonderfully diverse character of northern Portugal.
