Carneiro 'Tordo' Alvarinho White 2025
A beautifully expressive Alvarinho from the mountainous Basto subregion of Vinho Verde, bursting with vibrant grapefruit, ripe pineapple and refreshing citrus, with a rather lovely family story inspired by a little migratory bird.
Carneiro Tordo Alvarinho comes from the picturesque village of Atei, near Mondim de Basto, where the Carneiro family cultivates vineyards on the granite-rich soils of northern Portugal. Made from 100% Alvarinho, one of Portugal's most celebrated indigenous white grapes, this wine captures the wonderful balance of aromatic fruit, refreshing acidity and natural richness that makes Alvarinho so special.
The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed before fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. There's no oak ageing or malolactic fermentation, allowing the grape's naturally expressive character to shine through without interference.
In the glass, expect a pale lemon colour with beautiful aromas of fresh grapefruit, ripe pineapple and citrus. On the palate, it's dry and medium-bodied, with a lovely combination of tropical fruit, zesty lime and beautifully balanced acidity. At 12% ABV, it's refreshing yet surprisingly substantial, with a wonderfully persistent finish that makes it equally enjoyable on its own or alongside food.
What makes Alvarinho special?
Alvarinho is one of Portugal's most celebrated indigenous white grape varieties, particularly associated with the Vinho Verde region in northern Portugal.
Across the border in Galicia, Spain, the same grape is known as Albariño, where it's equally celebrated for producing beautifully aromatic, refreshing white wines.
What makes Alvarinho particularly interesting is its ability to combine intense aromatics, naturally refreshing acidity and impressive body. While many white grapes are either light and crisp or rich and full-bodied, Alvarinho manages to bring elements of both together.
Typical aromas include grapefruit, lemon, peach, apricot and tropical fruit, often accompanied by delicate floral or mineral characteristics.
And unlike the lightly sparkling, lower-alcohol wines that many people associate with Vinho Verde, Alvarinho can produce serious, structured whites with remarkable concentration and even ageing potential.
Carneiro's Tordo is a wonderful example of that balance, combining the grape's vibrant citrus personality with ripe pineapple, a rounded mouthfeel and a beautifully refreshing finish.
Why is it called Tordo?
This is one of the loveliest stories behind the Carneiro wines.
Tordo is the Portuguese word for thrush, a migratory bird that arrives in the Basto countryside and settles among the vineyards and olive trees.
Sometimes, according to the family's story, these birds become so enchanted by their surroundings that they decide not to leave, instead building nests and raising their young among the vines.
For Cristiana and Alberto Carneiro, the story felt particularly personal.
Although their family roots were firmly planted in Atei, previous generations had moved away from the land. In 2004, Cristiana and Alberto made the journey back, eventually exchanging their previous careers for a life dedicated to vineyards and winemaking.
Much like the little thrush, they arrived, fell in love with the landscape and decided to stay.
When they released their first Tordo Alvarinho in 2017, the name became a celebration of that homecoming—a reminder that sometimes the place you belong is the place your family came from all along.
It's a wonderfully personal story, and one that makes the wine feel like much more than simply another bottle of Alvarinho.
What makes Basto special?
Basto is one of the most inland subregions of Vinho Verde, where the lush green landscapes of northern Portugal begin to meet the rugged mountains of Trás-os-Montes.
Unlike the cooler, wetter coastal vineyards, Basto experiences colder winters and warmer, drier summers, allowing grapes to develop ripe, expressive fruit while maintaining the refreshing acidity for which Vinho Verde is famous.
The region's predominantly granite soils, mountainous surroundings and the influence of the Tâmega River create distinctive growing conditions.
These conditions are particularly interesting for Alvarinho, allowing the grape to develop riper citrus and tropical fruit characteristics while retaining its natural freshness.
It's a wonderful example of how the same grape can express itself differently depending on where it's grown, even within a single wine region.
About Carneiro Family Wines
Carneiro Family Wines is a small, family-run winery in Atei, in the Basto subregion of Vinho Verde, established by husband-and-wife team Alberto and Cristiana Carneiro.
Although neither originally came from a professional winemaking background, their connection to the family's ancestral home inspired them to return to Atei and dedicate themselves to producing wines that celebrate their heritage.
Today, Alberto is responsible for the vineyards while Cristiana oversees winemaking, ensuring the family's involvement extends from growing the grapes to the finished bottle.
Family is at the heart of everything they do, and that connection is reflected throughout their wines.
Their Tordo range celebrates the migratory bird that finds its home among the vineyards, while Luz is named after their daughter and the beautiful light of Basto. The Foral de Atei range pays tribute to the village's history, including its royal charter granted in 1514.
The winery works with traditional Portuguese grape varieties and follows a sustainable approach to viticulture, producing wines that celebrate both the distinctive landscape and the family's connection to it.
Each bottle tells a story of family, homecoming and the remarkable diversity of northern Portugal.
