Alvarinho
Widely grown throughout all 9 sub-regions of Portugal, this hardy "king grape" of the region is known for its ability to thrive in adverse weather conditions. It is believed to have originated in Monção & Melgaço, where it is truly celebrated and reaches its full potential.
Alvarinho is often featured as a single-varietal wine, but is also traditionally blended with Trajadura to add body and crispness. Contrary to common belief, some Alvarinho wines are suitable for aging in steel and barrel, and can benefit from a few years of aging.
Common notes of Alvarinho are quince, peach, banana, lemon, passionfruit, lychee, orange blossom, violet, and honey.
