Carneiro 'Luz' Blend White 2025
A beautifully fresh and gently spritzy white from the mountainous Basto subregion of Vinho Verde, bringing together traditional Portuguese grape varieties in a wonderfully aromatic, refreshing wine with a lovely family story behind its name.
Carneiro Luz White Blend comes from the picturesque village of Atei, near Mondim de Basto, where the Carneiro family grows its grapes on the granite-rich soils overlooking the Tâmega River. Made from a blend of traditional Portuguese white varieties, this lively wine captures the freshness, fruit and wonderfully easy-going character that make Vinho Verde so enjoyable.
Expect delicate aromas of green apple, apricot, citrus and a hint of tangerine, with a bright, refreshing palate and lively acidity. A gentle spritz adds an extra touch of freshness, while the wine's crisp, lemony finish makes it particularly enjoyable on a warm afternoon or alongside a leisurely lunch.
It's a lovely introduction to the more traditional, refreshing side of Vinho Verde, but with the personality and character of a small family winery.
Meet the grapes behind the blend
Luz brings together three wonderful indigenous Portuguese white grapes—Arinto, Loureiro and Fernão Pires—each contributing something different to this beautifully refreshing Vinho Verde.
Arinto – The Freshness
Known locally as Pedernã, Arinto is one of Portugal's great high-acidity white grapes. It brings vibrant lemon, lime and green apple characteristics, providing the crisp backbone that makes Vinho Verde so refreshing.
Loureiro – The Florals
Loureiro is celebrated for its beautifully fragrant personality, with delicate floral aromas, citrus and occasionally a distinctive laurel-like character. Its name comes from the Portuguese word for laurel, reflecting those aromatic qualities.
Fernão Pires – The Fruit
One of Portugal's most widely planted indigenous white grapes, Fernão Pires is known for its wonderfully expressive aromatics. Often showing ripe peach, apricot, citrus blossom and subtle tropical notes, it adds a lovely fruit-forward character and roundness to the blend. It's also known as Maria Gomes in the Bairrada region.
Together, the three grapes create a lovely balance of Arinto's refreshing acidity, Loureiro's delicate florals and Fernão Pires' expressive fruit—a beautifully harmonious expression of Vinho Verde.
Why is it called Luz?
This is one of my favourite stories behind the Carneiro wines.
Luz means "light" in Portuguese, and for Cristiana Carneiro, the name carries two very personal meanings.
The first is the extraordinary light that falls across the Basto landscape, particularly during the golden hours of the day. It's a quality of the region that Cristiana finds deeply moving, and something she wanted to celebrate through the wine.
But there's another reason.
Luz is also the name of Cristiana and Alberto's daughter.
For a winery so closely connected to family, home and heritage, it feels like the perfect name. It's a wine inspired by the beauty of the landscape, but also by the people who make that landscape feel like home.
And there's something rather fitting about naming such a bright, refreshing wine after light itself.
What makes Basto special?
Basto is one of the most inland subregions of Vinho Verde, where the lush green landscapes of northern Portugal begin to meet the mountains of Trás-os-Montes.
Unlike the cooler coastal vineyards, Basto experiences colder winters and warmer, drier summers, creating a greater contrast between the seasons. Its predominantly granite soils and mountainous surroundings contribute to wines with distinctive freshness and character.
The Tâmega River runs through the region, while the dramatic presence of Monte Farinha provides a beautiful backdrop to the vineyards and villages.
These conditions are particularly well suited to indigenous grapes such as Azal, Arinto and Loureiro, allowing them to develop expressive fruit while retaining the refreshing acidity that defines Vinho Verde.
About Carneiro Family Wines
Carneiro Family Wines is a small, family-run winery in Atei, in the Basto subregion of Vinho Verde, established by husband-and-wife team Alberto and Cristiana Carneiro.
Although neither originally came from a professional winemaking background, their connection to the family's ancestral home inspired them to return to Atei and dedicate themselves to producing wines that celebrate their heritage.
Today, Alberto is responsible for the vineyards while Cristiana oversees winemaking, ensuring that the family's involvement extends from the growing of the grapes to the finished bottle.
Family is at the heart of everything they do, and that connection is reflected throughout their wines.
Their Luz range celebrates their daughter and the beautiful light of Basto, while Tordo takes inspiration from a bird associated with the family's return to their ancestral home. The Foral de Atei range pays tribute to the village's history, including its royal charter granted in 1514.
The result is a collection of wines that tells a much bigger story than simply what happens in the vineyard. Each bottle is a celebration of family, place and the traditions of northern Portugal.
