The Vinho
Azulejo Bottle Stopper
$12.95
Azulejo (ez-zhu-ley-jhu) is a form of Portuguese & Spanish painted tin-glazed ceramic tile-work, and comes from the Arabic word meaning 'little stone'.
By the early 18th century, Portuguese tile artisans fell under the influence of Ming Dynasty Chinese porcelain design & Dutch Delftware, both of which led to the cobalt blue & white visual appearance of the Portuguese tiles that are seen all over Portugal today.
The 19th century saw the bourgeoisie begin to put them on the facades of buildings for the first time, embellishing their exteriors and becoming a statement of a new class in society, and ultimately changing the visual architecture of Portugal forever.
