Carneiro 'Luz' Loureiro White 2025
A beautifully fragrant and refreshing Loureiro from the mountainous Basto subregion of Vinho Verde, bursting with delicate florals, bright citrus and a distinctive hint of laurel, with a lovely family story behind its name.
Carneiro Luz Loureiro comes from the picturesque village of Atei, near Mondim de Basto, where the Carneiro family cultivates vineyards on granite-rich soils beside the Tâmega River. Made from 100% Loureiro, one of Portugal's most aromatic indigenous white grapes, this wine captures the freshness and wonderfully expressive character of northern Portugal.
The grapes are harvested by hand before being gently pressed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. There's no oak ageing or malolactic fermentation, allowing Loureiro's delicate floral aromas and vibrant freshness to take centre stage.
In the glass, expect a bright citrus colour with beautiful aromas of white flowers, fresh citrus and a distinctive hint of laurel. On the palate, it's light-bodied, crisp and wonderfully refreshing, with lively but balanced acidity and a gentle spritz that adds an extra touch of freshness. It's an incredibly versatile wine, equally enjoyable on its own or alongside seafood, grilled fish and lighter dishes.
What makes Loureiro special?
Loureiro is one of Portugal's most distinctive indigenous white grape varieties, particularly associated with the Vinho Verde region in northern Portugal.
Its name comes from the Portuguese word louro, meaning laurel or bay leaf, a reference to the distinctive herbal aromas sometimes found in the grape. And while many white varieties are celebrated primarily for their fruit, Loureiro is particularly prized for its beautifully expressive floral character.
Typical aromas include orange blossom, white flowers, citrus and delicate herbal notes, sometimes accompanied by hints of peach or green apple.
Historically, Loureiro was frequently used in blends, contributing its aromatic personality to other regional grapes such as Arinto and Trajadura. Today, however, producers increasingly bottle it on its own, allowing its fragrant character to shine.
And there's something particularly interesting about Loureiro: despite its intensely aromatic personality, it can produce remarkably delicate, elegant wines with refreshing acidity rather than excessive weight.
Carneiro's version is a wonderful example, combining Loureiro's signature floral character with the freshness and gentle effervescence traditionally associated with Vinho Verde.
Why is it called Luz?
The name Luz carries a particularly lovely meaning for the Carneiro family.
Luz means "light" in Portuguese, and the wine celebrates the extraordinary natural light that illuminates the Basto countryside, particularly as the sun moves across its mountains, vineyards and valleys.
But the name also has a deeply personal connection: Luz is the name of Alberto and Cristiana Carneiro's daughter.
It's a beautiful reflection of the family's philosophy, where their wines are as much about the people and landscape behind them as the grapes themselves.
The name feels particularly appropriate for this Loureiro: bright, delicate, fragrant and full of life.
What makes Basto special?
Basto is the most inland subregion of Vinho Verde, where the lush green landscapes of northern Portugal begin to meet the mountainous interior of Trás-os-Montes.
Unlike the cooler, wetter coastal areas, Basto experiences cold, rainy winters and warmer, drier summers, with its relatively high elevation helping shelter the vineyards from maritime winds.
The region's predominantly granite soils and dramatic landscape contribute to wines with distinctive freshness and mineral character.
The Tâmega River winds through the region, providing a beautiful backdrop to the vineyards and villages that have been producing wine for generations.
For aromatic white varieties such as Loureiro, these conditions allow the grapes to develop expressive flavours while maintaining the refreshing acidity that makes Vinho Verde so distinctive.
About Carneiro Family Wines
Carneiro Family Wines is a small, family-run winery in Atei, in the Basto subregion of Vinho Verde, established by husband-and-wife team Alberto and Cristiana Carneiro.
Although neither originally came from a professional winemaking background, their connection to the family's ancestral home inspired them to return to Atei and dedicate themselves to producing wines that celebrate their heritage.
Today, Alberto is responsible for the vineyards while Cristiana oversees winemaking, ensuring that the family's involvement extends from growing the grapes to the finished bottle.
Family is at the heart of everything they do, and that connection is reflected throughout their wines.
Their Luz range celebrates their daughter and the beautiful light of Basto, while Tordo takes inspiration from a migratory bird associated with the family's return to their ancestral home. The Foral de Atei range pays tribute to the village's history, including its royal charter granted in 1514.
The winery is committed to sustainable viticulture and vegan-friendly winemaking, working with traditional Portuguese grape varieties to produce wines that reflect their distinctive surroundings.
Each bottle is a celebration of family, heritage and the remarkable diversity of northern Portugal.
