Adega do Mato Colheita Selecionada Alvarinho 2025

A beautifully expressive, full-bodied Alvarinho from the mountainous eastern edge of Vinho Verde, combining ripe tropical fruit, refreshing acidity and the remarkable character of one of Portugal's most celebrated white grapes.

Adega do Mato Colheita Selecionada Alvarinho comes from Ribeira de Pena, where the lush landscapes of Vinho Verde begin to give way to the rugged mountains of Trás-os-Montes. Made from 100% Alvarinho, this wine offers a richer, more concentrated expression of a grape best known for its vibrant freshness and aromatic character.

In the glass, expect a beautiful citrus-yellow colour and expressive aromas of ripe tropical fruit, citrus and subtle mineral notes. On the palate, it's generous and rounded, with a lovely balance between ripe fruit and refreshing acidity. At 14% ABV, it has considerably more body than a typical light Vinho Verde, yet retains the freshness that makes Alvarinho such a wonderful food wine.

What makes Alvarinho special?

Alvarinho is one of Portugal's most celebrated indigenous white grapes, particularly associated with the Vinho Verde region in northern Portugal. Across the border in Galicia, Spain, the same grape is known as Albariño.

What makes Alvarinho so fascinating is its ability to combine intense aromatics, naturally refreshing acidity and impressive body. Depending on where it's grown, it can produce everything from crisp, citrus-driven whites to richer, more concentrated wines with tropical fruit, stone fruit and mineral characteristics.

While many people associate Vinho Verde with light, slightly fizzy wines, Alvarinho can produce serious, structured whites with considerable ageing potential.

Adega do Mato's version is a wonderful example of that fuller-bodied style, showing just how expressive Alvarinho can become in the warmer inland reaches of the region.

What does Colheita Selecionada mean?

Colheita Selecionada translates to "Selected Harvest", but in Vinho Verde it's much more than an attractive phrase on the label.

It's a regulated designation reserved for wines that meet additional quality requirements, including distinguished sensory characteristics and an acquired alcohol level at least one percentage point above the applicable legal minimum. The vintage must also appear on the label.

Importantly, it doesn't necessarily mean the wine has been aged in oak or that the grapes were harvested later than usual.

For this Alvarinho, the designation reflects a more substantial expression of Vinho Verde, with its 14% alcohol, generous fruit and distinctive structure setting it apart from the lighter styles many people know.

What makes this part of Vinho Verde different?

Adega do Mato sits near the eastern boundary of the Vinho Verde wine region, where Atlantic influences begin to meet the warmer, more continental conditions of Portugal's mountainous interior.

Unlike the cooler, wetter coastal vineyards, inland areas can experience warmer summer days and greater temperature variation, allowing grapes to develop richer fruit flavours while maintaining valuable natural acidity.

This helps explain why an Alvarinho from this part of Vinho Verde can feel considerably fuller and more concentrated than one grown closer to the Atlantic coast.

It's a wonderful reminder that Vinho Verde isn't one single style of wine, but a remarkably diverse region capable of producing everything from delicate, refreshing whites to powerful, age-worthy expressions.

About Adega do Mato

Adega do Mato is a family wine project revived in 2012 by Vitor Magalhães, who set out to restore a century-old winery and bring his family's dream of producing Vinho Verde to life.

Located in Balteiro, Ribeira de Pena, the winery sits close to the Tâmega River, surrounded by dense pine forests and the wild vegetation of northern Portugal's mountainous countryside.

The estate works with approximately four hectares of vineyards, carefully selecting traditional Portuguese grape varieties to create wines that reflect this distinctive corner of the region.

Even the name tells a story. Adega do Mato roughly translates to "winery in the scrubland", a reference to the surrounding landscape and its position between the green Atlantic-influenced vineyards of Vinho Verde and the rugged interior of Trás-os-Montes.

It's a fitting name for a winery that celebrates the local landscape, traditional grape varieties and the wonderfully diverse character of northern Portugal.
